Our daily habits greatly affect our health. Whatever we do on a daily basis will cause either good or harm to our whole system. Some people just can’t help but do bad habits that can worsen health conditions like thyroid problems. Here are the 5 bad habits that can worsen your thyroid condition.
Smoking
A lot of warnings and advocacies against the dangers of smoking have been exposed to the public, but people are still too stubborn to heed. Smoking can bring about damage to the thyroid or worsen the thyroid problem that is already present. Cyanide is one component of tobacco smoke, which is converted to thiocyanate, which acts as an anti-thyroid agent, directly inhibiting iodide uptake and hormone synthesis.
Other components of smoke that might have antithyroid action can decrease the binding of triiodothyronine (T3) to its receptors or its post-receptor actions in the liver, muscle, or other organs, or both. This means that the cyanide and other components of tobacco smoke mentioned above prevent the thyroid gland from producing hormones that connect to the receptors.
Eating the wrong food
It’s just either of these two: you are not aware, or you are just really stubborn and still insistent on eating the food that are not good for you. People with thyroid problems are prohibited from eating Cruciferous foods like bok choy, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, mustard and mustard greens, radishes, rutabagas, soy (anything made from it), and turnips. Though they are vegetables, they are believed to have high levels of goitrogens, the one that causes goiter. So next time you come across these foods, eat with moderation, or better yet, avoid them.
Gulping the bad drinks for you
Too much caffeine from coffee or other beverages can, well not kill you, but worsen your thyroid problem. According to hypothyroidmom.com, “Coffee impacts the absorption of levothyroxine (the synthetic thyroid hormone); this is why thyroid patients need to take their hormone replacement pill at least an hour before drinking coffee. The indirect but important point is that coffee contributes to estrogen dominance, cited above, and estrogen dominance inhibits T4 to T3 conversion.”
Stressing yourself
Stress has been one of the major causes of most illnesses in the world. Since stress negatively affect the brain and body, your immune system weakens, therefore making the body susceptible to a lot of diseases and health conditions. Hormonal imbalances can also result from stress.
Not heeding the expert’s recommendations
A lot of problems are caused by not listening and not heeding the health advice coming from your doctor. It is also true with how you treat your thyroid condition. Most of patients will have the tendency to just ignore the things that they should be doing. A stubborn person will reap a bitter fruit at the end, and he will regret it.
Thyroid problems and many other cases should not be taken for granted. Listening to your doctor’s advice won’t kill you. They are there to guide and help you in making your condition better.
